Hymnal 1982 accompaniment edition

This Ask Ambrose entry reverses what we normally do, because, here, Ambrose has a question for you! In fact, it’s a question we put out for conversation at this past summer’s Association of Anglican Musicians […]

Picture of hymn in hymnal

Denominational hymnals contain many wonderful texts that we do not sing on a regular basis—texts that might amplify and enrich the appointed scriptures, giving worshippers fresh insights into the nature of God and God’s work […]

Portrait of St. Cecilia by Jacques Blanchard

Q: Who was St. Cecilia, and why is she the patron saint of music? She seems important, and yet she’s not on our Episcopal calendar of saints. Why is that? A: Ambrose can’t be certain about this, […]

Organ Pipes

Nearly every denomination reports that there is inherent tension between the senior clergy of the parish and the musician. Not unlike mother-in-law and daughter-in-law, there is something in the DNA of the relationship that creates […]

Testimonials

The workshop about the use of incense is a perfect example of the kind of practical knowledge that we don’t always get during our seminary training or in the parish setting. Dr. Jim Farwell provided an important framework around the theology and history of incense, followed by a hands-on training, from the preparation of coals in the sacristy to the handling of the thurible during the liturgy. Thank you, VTS Music, Liturgy, and the Arts!
