A Gathering on Liturgical Formation

The Standing Commission on Liturgy and Music (SCLM) will host a Gathering on Liturgical Formation, a educational opportunity on the liturgy of the Episcopal Church. This event, which is co-sponsored by Lifelong Learning at Virginia Theological Seminary, will be held online via Zoom teleconferencing, October 19 – 21.

The purpose of this virtual gathering is to:

●      articulate current initiatives of the SCLM and Taskforce for Liturgical         & Prayer Book Revision (TFLPBR) in preparation for the 80th General Convention;

●      respond to current liturgical anxieties of the wider Church;

●      produce fruitful conversations across a wide range of backgrounds;

●      provide resources for cultural competence in planning liturgy.

The Gathering on Liturgical Formation will help clarify the options and best practices for the Church as the SCLM continues the work of understanding and reimagining the liturgy. To that same end, the SCLM hopes that the Gathering will help form its participants, learning more about the wider Church’s curiosities and anxieties surrounding liturgy.

Each plenary session will include two speakers in a conversation facilitated by the current chair of the SCLM, the Rev. Dr. Paul Fromberg.  The roster of speakers include the Rt. Rev. Mary Gray Reeves, Bishop of El Camino Real, resigned; the Rt. Rev. Deon Johnson, Bishop of Missouri; Dr. Liza Anderson, Faculty Member, the College of St. Scholastica; the Very Rev. Dr. James Turrell, Dean, The School of Theology, Sewanee; the Rt. Rev. Dr. J. Neil Alexander, Chair, Task Force for Liturgical and Prayer Book Revision; the Rev. Dr. Cameron Partridge, Rector, St. Aidan’s Episcopal Church, San Francisco, California; the Rev. Dr. Juan Oliver, Custodian, Book of Common Prayer; Rector, St. Ambrose Episcopal Church, Raleigh, North Carolina; and the Rev. Jemonde Taylor. The topics of these webinars include: The Purpose of Liturgy; The Church Calendar; an update on the TFLPBR; and The Book of Common Prayer.

The four webinars are presented free of charge and open to anyone who wants to participate. The webinars will be recorded and posted online for public use following the virtual gathering.
